Infosmack Deep Dive: Is Flash a flash in the pan

In this 4th Infosmack Deep Dive podcast, hosts Nigel Poulton and Rick Vanover dig into the past present and future of Flash technology – with a specific focus on it’s use in the enterprise and whether it will live up to the hype.  The debate also looks at the ways flash can be put to use today as well as the possible next greatest technology that could replace it.

Nigel and Rick are joined on the show by two guests with extensive knowledge of the storage industry as well as flash memory; Ray Lucchesi and Dave Wright.
Some of the questions posed in this weeks show include –
  • Will flash memory solve all of our storage related performance problems
  • Will flash memory still be around in 5-10 years
  • Should my next PC/laptop have a flash drive
  • Will flash memory allow to write crappier and crappier crapplication code
  • Is flash inspired auto-tiering making our lives easier or harder

From the semiconductor products side, this was bollocks from 1995. Phase-change and magnetic RAM (MRAM, even as storage) are shipping. In devices. (In the US…where we pay with SqEffing Zwinki Bux.) Flash has been capable of an arbitrary number of rewrites since 2003 (unless you don’t cool the rack;) so what’s this about swapping SSDs monthly? Do web promotions only go on two weeks at a time anymore?
